Product care
We create products that are built to last, so you can take them on countless adventures for years to come—we also want to reduce the need to buy more and keep them from ending up in landfills.
This guide is to help you extend the life of your SYSUM gear, sharing best practices for using using and washing them.
The most accurate care instructions for each product are printed inside the garment.
General Washing Instructions
We recommend hand washing and hang drying to help prolong the lifespan of your product and reduce the amount of microplastics entering the oceans.
Wear them under a waterfall or jump into a fresh stream, failing that, take them in the shower with you.
If you choose to throw them in the washer, we recommend use a zero MicroWaste washing bag like Guppyfriend Washing Bag. These bags reduce fibre shedding during washing, protecting your clothes and reliably filtering out microplastic fibres before they pollute the water.
Most of our products can be cared for in the following way:
- Gentle machine wash at 30°C
- Do not bleach
- Air dry
- Do not iron
- Use non-bio detergent (non bleach)
Please check the guidance on the label of each product for more specific care guidance.
Merino products
Merino wool naturally resists the buildup of odor-causing bacteria, so it stays fresher for longer, even after multiple wears.
This means that you can wear the garments more than once before you wash them. It also makes them perfect for multi-day adventures. Simply rinse them in fresh water and hang them up to air dry over night.

Pockets & Carryables
The pockets on our products are specifically designed to carry items over long periods, with fabrics chosen to endure many journeys. However, even the strongest fabric will naturally wear over time.
To help extend their lifespan, please remember:
- Avoid overpacking your pockets
- Don’t carry sharp objects that could pierce the fabric
- Prevent the sharp edges of gels and other packets from resting at the bottom of pockets; rounding them off where needed is a good practice

Minimising Waste
We hope you never get tired of your SYSUM gear and we encourage you to use them for as long as possible, repairing them where needed. We working on building repair and resale services, watch this space.
When you no longer need your products, consider options like, swapping, donating, or repurposing to avoid disposal. These actions extend the item’s life and reduce your environmental impact.
